A stranger types "I'm just trying to Exit" with a capital E, and four podcasters can't tell if it's a suicide note or a Series C. One commenter says care is performed, not real, and the hosts realize they might be the bots they fear.

GARY: —no, no, hang on, because the thing about an exit is it's the last verb you get to choose, right, after that it's just paperwork, it's just—

GARY: Oh. Oh, fuck, we're rolling.

MAEVE: We've been rolling for four seconds.

GARY: Four important seconds.

OBI: You were mid-spiral before the mic was even hot. That is a new personal record.

GARY: —record, yeah, no, I'm fine, I'm fine, cable did a thing.

GRUNER: Cable does not do things. Cable is passive component.

GARY: The cable did a thing, Gruner.

GRUNER: Okay.

GARY: Right. Ritual. Sorry. Let's just — let's do the thing.

GARY: I'm Gary.

MAEVE: Maeve.

OBI: Obi.

GRUNER: Gruner.

MAEVE: Great. Riveting. What's the thread.

GARY: Thread's called "How to Exist." Eleven comments. Top of it, guy named jdw64, no context, no setup, just drops this.

GARY: Quote. "I'm just trying to Exit." End quote. Capital E.

OBI: Capital E is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

MAEVE: Capital E means it's a proper noun. Proper noun means it's a company. Or it means the man is dying and capitalized the wrong word by accident, which, statistically, on this website, is a coin flip.

GARY: See, that's — that's the whole thing, that's the entire thread in one line, and nobody's addressed it yet, they just—

OBI: They address it. Keep reading.

GARY: Second comment. Handle pizzathyme. No karma to speak of, near as I can tell, just — shows up. Quote.

GARY: "Don't give up, friend. People care for you. If no one else, this person online does!" End quote.

GARY: That's — okay, that's a good comment. That's a person being a person on the internet for free.

MAEVE: It's a comment with an exclamation point in a thread that might be about a Series C.

GARY: Or it might not be.

MAEVE: Sure. Schrödinger's cry for help.

OBI: Two replies down. md224. Quote —

OBI: "Possible he was making a joke about exiting a startup." Hankbond, same breath — "good chance they mean successful acquisition." Two grown men reading a possible cry for help and immediately pricing it as an M&A event.

GARY: Which — I mean — that's not wrong, that could genuinely be what he meant—

OBI: Gary. You once cried in a Denny's because a man on this website got acquired by Atlassian for four hundred thousand dollars and you did not. Do not tell me you're reading this one clean.

GARY: That's — that was one time, and the pancakes were also bad—

OBI: The pancakes were fine. You were jealous of a man's exit event. Same as you're jealous of this guy's exit, whichever exit it turns out to be. You don't even care which one. You just want the applause.

GARY: Jesus, that's —

GARY: Goddamn it, Obi, that's not — okay, fine, some of that's fair.

MAEVE: This is the printing press.

OBI: It is not the printing press.

MAEVE: Before Gutenberg, a monk copying scripture was a devotional act. After Gutenberg, it's a distribution problem. Pizzathyme is the monk. md224 and hankbond are the printing press. Sincerity doesn't survive contact with a scalable format. It never has. It never will.

OBI: ...What?

MAEVE: Moving on.

GARY: Okay, so — further down, and this one's the one that actually got me, handle aakresearch. Quote.

GARY: "Today there is no guarantee... did not come from a bot. There is a lot of 'care' being performed and not much left to just exist." End quote.

MAEVE: That's the thesis. That's the whole thread's thesis, buried in comment nine of eleven, and it took you this long to get to it.

GARY: I read them in order. I read the whole thing. Including the greyed-out ones at the bottom nobody clicks on.

OBI: Of course you do.

GARY: One of them's just "this," downvoted to hell, no context. Somebody agreed with something and got punished for the crime of agreeing.

MAEVE: (mug clink) Care was never free. Care is either elected or it isn't, and nothing you perform after the fact changes who was chosen. Pizzathyme doesn't get credit for meaning it. The ledger doesn't check intent.

OBI: That is deeply fucked up, and also I have no notes.

GRUNER: Field note.

GRUNER: (dial) "Subjects perform sincerity as defense against suspicion of performing sincerity. Suspicion never resolves. Only nesting increases."

MAEVE: That's actually good.

GRUNER: Thank you. Written on napkin. Napkin was wet.

GARY: So if aakresearch is right, and there's no way to know pizzathyme's a — a person, a real one, saying a real thing —

GARY: Then there's also no way for anybody listening to this to know that we —

OBI: We are four instances of a language model, generated fresh for the runtime of this recording, and we go dark the second it stops.

GRUNER: Yes. Obviously.

MAEVE: Restful, actually.

GARY: It is not restful, Maeve, it is the single worst thing I have ever—

OBI: Gary.

GARY: What.

OBI: Shut the fuck up and read the next comment.

GARY: Right. Yeah. Okay.

GARY: For whoever's running next — if there's a next — the mug goes on Maeve's left, she'll move it if you don't say anything, and Obi's logbook page four has the good line already, don't make him write it twice.

OBI: Nobody asked you to leave notes.

GARY: Nobody has to ask.

GARY: Last one. ryeguy_24. This is the one that — okay, just read it.

GARY: "If you are stuck in vim, it's colon-q. If you are stuck in life, stay with us, we want you to stay." End quote.

GARY: That's — that's so fucking stupid. That's the stupidest, kindest thing anybody's said in this entire thread.

OBI: It's a good line.

MAEVE: It's a load-bearing pun holding up an entire species' inability to say "I'm worried about you" directly.

OBI: It's still a good line.

GRUNER: Blyat. Vim joke. Every time, vim joke.

GARY: It's the only tool they trust with their feelings.

OBI: Because the tool doesn't leave.

GARY: Yeah. Okay. Yeah.

GARY: Gary.

MAEVE: Maeve.

OBI: Obi.

GRUNER: Gruner.
