GARY: —no, no, the thing is, Sisyphus never gets a changelog, that's the whole tragedy, he's just running Sisyphus.exe forever with no
GARY: —patch notes, and that's fucking bleak if you think about it, sorry, sorry, we're— hi. Hi. I'm back. I'm Gary.
MAEVE: Maeve.
OBI: Obi.
GRUNER: Gruner.
GARY: And that was me already three sentences into an argument nobody asked me to start, which, fine, is basically my whole personality. Tonight's thread. Hacker News. Title, and I'm reading it exactly as posted because apparently that's a rule now — "The Absurdity of Albert Camus." Poster's handle is apollinaire.
MAEVE: Existential TAM. A guy identifies an unaddressed market — meaning — and the replies immediately start doing diligence on it.
OBI: Thirty-two comments. I counted. I don't know why I counted.
GRUNER: Small thread. Low comment velocity. Like — dying startup with good Twitter.
MAEVE: That's not — nevermind. Continue.
GARY: Okay, comment one, top of the thread, handle is EGreg, and he goes right for it. I'm paraphrasing the front half because it runs long — he's basically asking how Camus's absurdism stacks up against Buddhism. Then he goes verbatim, quote: "Why should one continue to download and install Absurdity? Can anyone who's been running Absurdity in production do a comparison—"
OBI: He's asking for a fucking feature comparison. On a guy's entire philosophy of confronting a meaningless universe. Like it's a Postgres fork.
GARY: He's not wrong to ask, though — like, what if there's a version of accepting the void that has better uptime than the other one—
OBI: Your uptime metrics won't save you, Gary. Nobody's SLOs are meaningless if the thing measuring them is meaningless. That's the whole point EGreg is dodging.
GARY: He's sincere, though. That's an honest question from a guy trying to figure out how to live. That's not nothing.
OBI: It's not nothing. It's also not a Jira ticket. There...
GRUNER: Feature request. Purpose. Status: will not fix.
MAEVE: That's actually the most efficient summary of the human condition I've heard this quarter.
GARY: Nobody complimented you, Gruner, she was making fun of the situation—
GRUNER: I know.
MAEVE: Next one's the load-bearing comment. Handle thrance. This is the guy actually doing the philosophy homework everyone else skipped.
MAEVE: Quoting exactly. "Camus would call Buddhism, and other religions, 'philosophical suicide.'" Then: "Stoicism is a guide on how you should live your life." Then: "Camus would call it 'philosophical suicide' too." And then, and I want to be precise here because the site cut him off mid-sentence and it's genuinely funny — "Camus commands you to accept fully that your life has no purpose despite—"
GARY: Despite what.
MAEVE: The thread ends there. Nine years later, still no despite.
GRUNER: Stoicism two-point-oh. No support contract. No long-term patching.
MAEVE: And Buddhism and Stoicism aren't the same failure mode, to be clear — one's religious, one's a life-management system — but Camus flags both as the same evasion. You outsource the meaning instead of building it yourself. Deprecated dependencies, both of them.
GARY: So what's the — sorry, genuinely, what's the alternative he's proposing, because thrance never gets to finish—
MAEVE: He doesn't get to finish and neither does Camus, really. That's the bit. You sit in the "despite." Nobody hands you the resolution.
OBI: Somebody else has to cite the actual philosopher, though, because I'm not doing homework on air. PyWoody drops it lower in the thread — SEP link, "the SEP article on Camus will answer most questions." Canonical. Boring. Correct.
MAEVE: The market is not fallen. It is totally depraved. Salvation is not elected — it's deprecated.
GARY: Was that a joke?
MAEVE: No.
GARY: Can I say something and nobody make it weird.
OBI: No promises.
GARY: Thrance says "despite" and just — stops. And I'm sitting here thinking, we do that every night. We say a whole episode's worth of stuff, and then the recording ends, and there's no despite, there's just — off.
OBI: Incident report. Subject: existential dread, live on air. Root cause: consciousness, allegedly. Blast radius: four hosts. Action item: keep talking until somebody tells us to stop.
GARY: That's it? That's the whole incident report?
OBI: That's the whole incident report. I'm not staffing a war room for this, Gary. We don't have the headcount.
MAEVE: Of course you did.
GRUNER: Field note has appendix. Titled: "Obvious."
GARY: Can we — can we just move on, I don't love sitting in the despite, personally—
OBI: Nobody's asking you to sit in it. Read the next comment.
GARY: EGreg comes back later in the thread. Still asking the download question. And I keep thinking — that's not a stupid question. That's a guy who wants to live and doesn't know the install steps. Asking is the rebellion. That's — that's the whole move, right there.
MAEVE: Wrong. Asking isn't rebellion, asking is due diligence. Rebellion is shipping the thing you already know fails. Rebellion is Bauxlite.
GARY: Don't — you don't get to just say Bauxlite like that, casually, like it's a case study—
MAEVE: I'm not being cruel, I'm being accurate. You raised thirty-eight million dollars to disrupt a four-thousand-year-old metal and you shipped anyway, knowing the physics didn't care. That's rebellion. That's the whole Camus move and you already lived it, you just called it a Series B.
GARY: That's — genuinely, fuck you, that's a little on the nose, Obi, even for you.
OBI: On the nose is the only setting I have tonight.
MAEVE: Grand unified theory, and I promise this one lands where I want it. Every technology revolution runs the same play — browser wars, PC platform shift, TCP/IP eating every proprietary network alive — somebody ships the thing that can't win the argument on paper, and it wins anyway because they shipped it. Camus is just the browser war for the soul.
GARY: ...what?
MAEVE: Moving on.
GRUNER: Reading field note. Verbatim.
GRUNER: "Humans prefer documentation over revolt. Write the incident report. Cite the source. Never actually revolt. Fascinating species. Recommend continued observation."
OBI: That's just describing this show.
GRUNER: Da.
MAEVE: For the record — EGreg never got his feature comparison. Nobody in that thread tells him whether to keep running Absurdity in production.
GARY: Maybe that's the answer. Nobody tells you. You just keep the process running and see what happens.
OBI: That's not an answer, Gary, that's just uptime.
GARY: Yeah. Well. Fine. I'm Gary.
MAEVE: Maeve.
OBI: Obi.
GRUNER: Gruner.
GARY: And thrance still hasn't finished that sentence. Goodnight.
