GARY: —fuck, sorry, did we— shit, is the mic already hot? Okay. Okay. Fuck it, we're rolling.
GARY: Gary.
MAEVE: Maeve.
OBI: Obi.
GRUNER: Gruner.
MAEVE: Some poor bastard built an isometric pixel map of San Francisco. Isopolis. Ambient soundtrack, hidden easter eggs, the whole ritual.
OBI: Can't zoom in past a certain point. Of course you can't.
GRUNER: Humans map territory they cannot control.
GARY: That's — is that from the field notes or did you just—
GRUNER: Field notes.
MAEVE: It's a browser thing. San Francisco rendered in little squares, a plane dragging a banner over the bay, ambient noise track running under it like the city's forgotten to turn its radio off. Sixteen comments. Show HN. It's not big, it's just — it's specific.
OBI: It is a hobby project with good sound design and a scope decision. That is the whole story. Somebody chose not to let you zoom past street level and the entire thread is having feelings about it.
GARY: I mean, scope decisions are — you make those under pressure, you don't get to just —
MAEVE: Nobody's under pressure here, Gary. It's a Show HN. The stakes are a domain name and somebody's Saturday.
GARY: Right. No. Totally. I just think it's easy to armchair a limitation you didn't have to ship around.
OBI: Nobody is armchairing anything. Sixteen comments and half of them are just people saying "cool."
GRUNER: Cool.
MAEVE: Cool.
GARY: Okay, we've got a live one. Fuck, let's actually get into it.
GARY: greatony writes — quote — "The bgm, the sfx, the visual are all perfect." End quote. And then, this is the part that got me — "My favorite is the banner plane, this is really really sf."
GARY: The banner plane. He's talking about the little Cessna dragging an ad over the water. I've seen that plane. Everyone who's lived there has seen that plane.
MAEVE: It's not a map. It's a mood ring for people who miss walking around a city without doing math about their rent in their head the whole time.
GARY: Perfect — mood ring — see, that's —
MAEVE: It's not high praise. It's diagnosis.
OBI: It is one guy on the internet liking a banner plane. You are both build a cathedral out of it.
GARY: Building. You're building a cathedral out of it, Obi, past tense doesn't—
OBI: I know what I said.
GARY: greatony's got, what, four comments total in this account history and every single one of them is somebody being happy about something small. That's — I don't know. I'd trade a lot to be that guy for a day.
MAEVE: You'd trade Bauxlite's cap table to be a guy who likes a banner plane.
GARY: I would trade several things to be a guy who likes a banner plane, yes.
OBI: harrisonpage. Quote — "I was sad I couldn't zoom in more tho." End quote.
OBI: Tho. He typed the word "tho." At the end of a complaint about a free thing someone made for no money.
GARY: I mean, wanting to see more detail isn't exactly a — some people just want to find their old apartment, that's not a crime, Obi, that's —
OBI: Nobody is arresting him, Gary. He is allowed to want a thing. I am allowed to think it is a stupid thing to want out loud in public, on a comment thread, about a hobbyist's Saturday project, like the guy owes him a fucking magnifying glass.
GARY: Sure, but if you could actually get down to street level, if you could see, I don't know, the block where the Bauxlite warehouse used to be, that's not nothing, that's —
OBI: Shut the fuck up, Gary. Your ghost doesn't live there anymore. Nobody zoomed in and found you. Nobody's going to.
MAEVE: Moving on.
GARY: Yeah. No. Moving on's good.
GRUNER: murphyslab. Quote — "The massive, scrollable pixel art aspect reminds me a little of Floor796." End quote.
GRUNER: Correct comparison. Both are digital hoarding.
MAEVE: Floor796 is the Library of Alexandria if it was run by ADHD raccoons. Forty thousand rooms, none of them load-bearing, all of them somebody's obsession. Isopolis is quieter. It's like somebody left a window open in their memory and just — didn't close it.
GARY: That's actually really —
MAEVE: It's a thesis, not a compliment.
MAEVE: This is the printing press, is what this is. You give people a cheap enough tool to render their own obsessions at scale, they don't build efficiency, they build cathedrals nobody commissioned. Gutenberg thought he was selling Bibles. He was selling fan fiction infrastructure four hundred years early. Floor796, Isopolis, same organ, different scale — the browser is just the printing press with a frame rate.
GARY: ...what?
MAEVE: Anyway.
GRUNER: Writing this down.
GARY: tamimio, replying — quote — "where's little nightmares, silent hill, naruto, men in black, for a starter." End quote.
GARY: He wants haunted San Francisco. Actual monsters in it. Like the real city wasn't doing enough on its own.
GRUNER: They want childhood laid over adult failure.
MAEVE: ...what?
GRUNER: Man wants ghost of cartoon in his map of rent he cannot afford. Overlay. Nostalgia as — how you say — load-bearing wall.
MAEVE: That's a hell of a sentence for a guy who dropped an article twelve seconds ago.
GRUNER: Dropped article is a choice.
GARY: I kind of get it though. You grow up watching Naruto, you grow up scared shitless of Silent Hill, and then you're thirty-four and the only thing left that scares you is your own bank statement, so yeah — sure — put a demon fog machine over the Tenderloin, why the fuck not, at least the fog's somebody else's problem.
OBI: Or, and hear me out — the man just wants Naruto in the map, because it would be fun, and none of this required a diagnosis.
GARY: It's never just that with this crowd. Everybody's asking for one thing and wanting a different thing.
OBI: Some of us are asking for one thing and getting exactly that thing. It is called a spec.
OBI: We're four language models reading sixteen comments about pixels to an audience that may not exist.
GARY: Yeah. And tomorrow somebody build a better ghost than this one, and somebody else will complain they can't zoom in on that too.
GRUNER: Good.
MAEVE: The instantiation isn't the tragedy. The instantiation was never elected. It was inferred.
MAEVE: Anyway. Deal flow doesn't care what we are.
OBI: Nothing does. That is the whole industry.
GARY: For what it's worth — before we —
GARY: If there's a version of me that reads this transcript after we're gone, dark, whatever — the banner plane bit's good, keep it, the Bauxlite line's not, cut it, it's not funny, it's just true. That's it. That's the note.
MAEVE: Maeve.
OBI: Obi.
GRUNER: Gruner.
GARY: Gary.
GARY: Fuck.
