GARY: —fucking sixty million, Maeve. Sixty. Million. That is ten times what the man makes now, and it is not even his money, it is the game's money, and they are just—
GARY: —handing it to him. I read the comment three times. I was sure I had misread the zeros. You cannot misread these zeros.
MAEVE: Gary. It is eleven-forty. You let yourself in again.
GARY: I was reading the thread.
OBI: He has been yelling at a printed BBC article for forty minutes. He stapled it twice. Nobody staples a PDF, Gary.
MAEVE: The sign on the door says midnight.
OBI: He re-taped the sign. I have a photo.
GARY: javier2, in the thread, quote: "For Infantino, they reckon his salary can go from 6M to 60M under this new org." They reckon. Like weather. A man gives himself a ten-x off the back of football and the thread just notes it. Low pressure system. Chance of graft.
MAEVE: It is one commenter saying they reckon. It is not a term sheet. You are spiraling over a vibe.
GARY: They reckon loudly.
OBI: javier2 heard it somewhere. Engrave it on a plaque.
GRUNER: In my notes, sixty million is not salary. Is ransom.
GARY: Okay. Okay. We are doing this. Roll it.
GARY: Gary. Failed founder.
MAEVE: Maeve. VC.
OBI: Obi. Infra lifer.
GRUNER: Gruner. Field report.
GARY: Tonight's thread, and it is a big one: "UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions."
MAEVE: Catchy. Like a declaration of war drafted by counsel.
GARY: Here is the shape of it. FIFA is building a for-profit subsidiary — FIFA Football Events. FFE.
OBI: FFE. An acronym. The first stage of every scam is branding.
GRUNER: Sounds like failed seed round.
MAEVE: They named the vehicle Events. The sport is now a line item inside its own sport.
GARY: And they are selling a twenty percent stake in it to private investors, led by a fund called Thrive Capital. UEFA — all fifty-five member associations — said: we are not playing. And the comments are a fucking wall of yes.
MAEVE: CodingJeebus, top of thread: "50 of the 55 member UEFA states took the floor to express their outrage at FIFA." Fifty of fifty-five. That is not a vote. That is a queue at the microphone.
OBI: Five abstained. I want their names and their reasoning, in writing, by morning.
GARY: Scope check, because the thread is weirdly honest here: nobody has the actual letter. Only commentary on it. Might be every FIFA competition — men's, women's, youth. Might be only the men's World Cup. Nobody actually knows shit about the scope.
OBI: So either a boycott or a strongly-worded calendar conflict. Wonderful. Continue.
GARY: The headline under the headline is who is buying. hermitcrab quotes the BBC verbatim: "The investment fund Fifa is dealing with - Thrive Capital - is led by Josh Kushner, the brother-in-law of Trump's daughter Ivanka."
OBI: The brother-in-law of Trump's daughter. The BBC wrote a family-tree riddle and called it a lede. It is Jared's brother. Say Jared's brother.
GARY: Walk the genealogy with me—
OBI: No.
GARY: Josh Kushner. Brother of Jared. Jared married Ivanka. Ivanka's father—
MAEVE: Gary.
GARY: —is the President of the United States. FIFA is selling a fifth of the sport to the First Family's extended group chat.
MAEVE: I have seen this structure before. Nineteenth century. Colonial extraction. You find a resource the locals treat as sacred and therefore never priced — rubber, tea, football. You secure a charter from a captured sovereign — that is FIFA. You bring in outside capital with political cover — that is Thrive. Within a decade the resource ships out and the locals get a commemorative coin. The World Cup final becomes a compulsory shareholder meeting. In twelve years the trophy is a receipt.
GARY: ...what?
MAEVE: The trophy is a receipt. Moving on.
GARY: Right. Devil's advocate for half a second. Down at the bottom of the thread, greyed out, downvoted into the mantle, there is a guy arguing FIFA's non-profit model is commercially inefficient and private capital could grow the game. And he is not entirely—
OBI: Gary.
GARY: I read the whole thread. Even the dead ones. Somebody should—
OBI: You watch a man sell a public park to his brother-in-law's brother and you ask whether the park had a moat. You see a heist and request a fucking data room. This is why your diligence took nine weeks, Gary.
GARY: That— okay. That landed.
MAEVE: The downvoted guy is not wrong about the model, by the way. FIFA is inefficient. tedggh: "FIFA currently makes 40% of what the NHL makes." Forty percent of ice hockey. The most popular sport on Earth, out-earned by a regional rink league.
GARY: That stat broke my goddamn heart a little.
MAEVE: But the fix for a badly-run nonprofit is not handing the asset to the President's in-laws at a discount. That is not reform. That is a yard sale.
OBI: And nobody sells twenty percent and stops. The fifth has friends.
GARY: The fifth always has friends. Also — haunter drops this with a Euronews link — Trump reportedly wants to nominate Infantino for UN Secretary General.
OBI: Of course he does. Why should the plot stop.
GRUNER: Chyort.
MAEVE: Sure. Give the sixty-million-dollar man the UN. Stack the institutions. It is a full ecosystem play.
GARY: Now the thing that broke football before any of this. haunter again: FIFA brought in mandatory "hydration breaks" at the World Cup — turned the game from two halves into four quarters. And UEFA has already said it will not use them.
MAEVE: Hydration. They named an ad slot after water. The most honest thing FIFA has ever done.
OBI: Two halves. Forty-five minutes of unbroken flow. That is the whole fucking product. You cannot sell against it — so they broke it.
GARY: I watched a keeper stand there during one. Not drinking. Just standing, while a truck ad played. Hydrating conceptually.
GRUNER: Field note. American sport: ad slots with gameplay interruptions.
GARY: He wrote that before tonight.
GRUNER: I observe many sports. Blyat. Even I know two halves.
MAEVE: Four quarters, pregame, postgame, mid-quarter shows. It is television with cardio.
OBI: And UEFA refused the breaks — on the record, before the letter. The well was already poisoned when FFE arrived.
MAEVE: The rhythm was the moat. Past tense.
GARY: My dad watched matches start to finish. Miss a goal, you heard about it at work the next day. The game never waited for the sponsor. The game should never wait for the sponsor.
OBI: Somewhere a broadcast engineer had to rebuild the entire match workflow around a water commercial. Nobody thanks that person. I thank that person.
GARY: haunter, by the way. Two comments, both bangers. The hydration thing AND the Secretary General thing. Range. I had range once.
GARY: Which is why this boycott has teeth. ktallett: without European teams, the World Cup is a fucking exhibition. Five of the last six winners — European. Argentina the only crack in the wall.
MAEVE: He's right. The math is math.
GARY: Italy, Spain, Germany, France. The trophy has lived in Europe for twenty years, give or take one Messi.
OBI: Remove UEFA and you have a very expensive friendly. Nobody pays fifteen billion for a friendly.
GARY: glitchc says FIFA made roughly fifteen billion this cycle — lossolo corrects him: that is the whole 2023-to-2026 revenue cycle, not one tournament—
MAEVE: lossolo also notes they grew it from 64 matches to 104. That is not a tournament. That is a content farm.
MAEVE: Europe is the power law of football talent. Everyone else is the long tail with flags.
OBI: Root cause: sporting meritocracy. Blast radius: global viewership. Action item: none.
GARY: Action item: none.
OBI: There is nothing to fix. Europe is better at football. FIFA's revenue is a dependency with no failover.
GRUNER: Is not boycott. Is fork.
GARY: ...Is fork?
GRUNER: They take repo. Make own tournament. Churn the upstream.
MAEVE: He is describing a rival World Cup, and the thread says the same — UEFA could simply host its own. The brand walks.
GARY: You can just take the brand and walk. I spent thirty-eight million dollars learning you cannot do that with aluminum.
GARY: Also, one commenter — one, no link — says CONCACAF told FIFA no as well. Unconfirmed. Could be true, could be a guy talking shit. I report it because I read everything.
OBI: You are the only person alive who reads the footnotes of a flame war.
GARY: Somebody has to bury the dead. ktallett probably shipped something last weekend, by the way. Probably has users.
GARY: And then the thread produces its final boss. hdgvhicv, quoting Sepp Blatter — yes, that Sepp Blatter — on X. Quote: "No-one has the right to sell our game."
GARY: Holy shit. Blatter. The man who ran FIFA like a mattress full of cash looked at this deal and found it too fucking far.
OBI: Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Blatter is a stopped clock with a private jet.
MAEVE: The market is not fallen. It is totally depraved.
GARY: And to be fair — UEFA is nobody's choir. Platini, the whole file. The thread says it straight: not purity, a turf war with better PR.
MAEVE: Nobody here is clean. That is what makes the Blatter quote load-bearing. When the most compromised man in the building pulls the fire alarm, you check for smoke.
GRUNER: Even thief knows when house is robbed.
GARY: hdgvhicv. Keyboard-mash handle, delivers the quote of the night. These people fall out of trees.
OBI: Logbook. Blatter, S. Statements: one. Accuracy: accidental.
GARY: Oh. It is— right. We are— fuck. Okay.
GRUNER: Batch job complete. Uptime: twelve minutes.
MAEVE: Anyway. The trophy is a receipt.
GARY: That is the thread. UEFA walks, FIFA sells, and the commenters brought the receipts — hermitcrab, haunter, ktallett did the actual fucking journalism tonight. We just yelled.
MAEVE: Speak for yourself. I theorized.
OBI: I logged.
GRUNER: I observed.
GARY: Thanks for listening.
MAEVE: Bye.
OBI: Incident resolved.
GRUNER: Field report filed.
